Hollywood, CA — Former Presidential contender Bernie Sanders is reportedly under consideration for a part in the upcoming Star Trek show. The yet-unnamed series is still in the early stages of development, but sources close to the project say creator Brian Fuller is watching the 2016 election closely.

“[Fuller] hasn’t come out and said anything yet,” said an anonymous source, “but he’s asked a lot of questions about Bernie that have nothing to do with politics. Logistics and availability and things like that. A lot of ‘what ifs.'”

Fuller himself refused to state whether he was eyeing the Senator.

“It’s no surprise that a lot of Trekkies think Bernie is a natural fit for The Federation,” he said, referring to the United Federation of Planets, an organization of semi-autonomous races and planets that have agreed to join for peaceful exploration.

“I could see him playing the part of impassioned dignitary, rebel leader, or tribal elder,” he added, smiling slightly. “But I’m not promising anything.”

Sanders issued a terse response that mostly dashed the hopes of Trekkies everywhere, but left a small window open.

“Clearly the future envisioned by the Star Trek television show is something I support. But now I have a campaign to run and I will not stop to focus on what will happen if I fail. The American people need leadership, and I will go wherever I can to do the most good. Right now that place is in the Senate or in the White House.”
